Meet Remy

Yes, we have added another member to our family...a third four legged buddy, Remy! I have had a yorkie just about my entire life. I got Frisky when I was five and he passed away shortly after I went to college. Soon after Joe and I were married, we adopted Logan, and he was with us until he passed away about a year ago. I was missing a little fluffy buddy and my dad helped us to find and adopt Remy! He is 8 months old and a very sweet and loving little boy. We are very excited to have him in our home.Remy and Eleanor have also become the best of buds. They play and play until both just pass out, and even then they usually stay close to each other (as you can tell from this pic).

Loren was invited to a skating birthday party this weekend and it was her first time roller staking. Bradley put on skates, too, but he only made it two times around the rink holding VERY tightly onto my hands and he was done with that. Loren loved skating and was a pro before we left and already asking to go back. It was a great afternoon of lots of fun and time to celebrate a good friend's birthday.

We've had a handful of little snows this year...but today's was the biggest (at a whopping 2.5 inches!). It was enough that we could pull the sleds out first thing this morning before the sun hit the yard and started melting the snow. The kids were so excited to finally get sled...and we did have fun! While lots of snow all winter can be annoying, I do miss having a good snow this year. I hope we can get at least one good "playing" snow before winter's out.

I do not really have a "resolution" this year...well, I kinda don't. I love a list and I love marking things off a list when they are done. So, I'm hoping that motivation will keep me going with my Daily list for 2012. One little list that I do everyday that I am hoping will keep me sane, get me healthier and just keep life going smoothly!

Day 1...yes, I know its the 6th of January, but our treadmill did not arrive until today so today is going to be the first time I can say I accomplished everything on the list!. The list includes:

do one load of laundry
empty the dishwasher
fix the bed
complete one scrapbook page
run/walk for at least 20 minutes on the treadmill
spend at least 15 minutes one on one with each of the kidoos
have at least 15 minutes of "quiet time" or bible study
drink at least 3 glasses of water a day
assign one household chore to Loren and Bradley

We are 6 days into the new year, and I have managed to keep pretty well to this list. I am hoping that this little list will help to keep me on track in 2012!!!

Since we will be heading home to spend Christmas with our family, we celebrated this morning with just our family. We started with a devotion about What Jesus wants for Christmas (its YOU) and then we opened our gifts. The kids were so excited and have loved playing with all the new toys (and Wii games) this morning. I love spending time like with my family and seeing the excitement in my kids on days like this!

Look at what Melf the Elf has been up to! Last night he got out some crepe paper, scissors and tape and covered the kids doorways! I don't know if he was trying to get them to stay in their room or what, but the kids thought it was it great! He didn't try to hide the fact that he was the culprit considering he was sitting on the mantle with the evidence all around him. Loren's quote "we adopted the silliest elf!"

Owen walks into the kitchen, shows me his new truck and says "open". The new truck had been wrapped and under the tree, but I guess Owen just could not wait. Well, it's being wrapped up again and I hope he's as excited about it the second time he opens it!

This year we adopted an Elf of the Shelf and we named him Melf. He's been fun to have around and the kids wake up every morning searching for his new spot for the day. We got a surprise this week when one morning Melf had a gift for the kids...magic seeds! We planted the seeds in sugar and sprinkled them with salt and waited. The next morning they had grown into gingerbread cookies! WOW! He sure is one amazing elf!!!

Loren went for her 6 year well visit this week...and its just further reinforced what we always tell her, "you will always be a big sister, even if your brothers are bigger than you!".

Loren height was 44 inches (24%) and her weight was 40.6lbs (25%).

Most of our friends have children...and most of them young children. And most of our friends share the same faith we do. We had the opportunity to read a great book with lot of wonderful ideas for keeping the focus of Christmas on Christ. Keeping it Christ-Centered. And it wasn't until after we got the book that I realized the authors were close friends with Joseph's family, especially his sister. I encourage you to check out this book and start some new traditions with your family and children in an effort to keep Christ in Christmas!

Loren's kindergarten class had a field trip to Northlake Mall in Charlotte Friday (which was also Loren's birthday!). We all went along and mom met us there to spend the day in town. We went to Build a Bear and to see Santa (both part of the field trip) and then spent the rest of the day shopping, going out to eat at Loren's restaurant of choice and visiting Carolina Christmas at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It was a great day and extra special because my little girl is now 6!!!

This morning we went to the Morning with Santa at the Ashe Arts Council. This is a little gem that we have not heard of before this year, but we are hoping it will be a yearly tradition. The kids got to meet with Santa, they got cookies and milk, story time with Mrs. Claus and a super goody bag. It was a great way to spend our Saturday morning!!!

We were off a little on our 18 month well visit considering Owen is 19 months today...but better late than never. Although this boy eats like a horse, he still continues to gain weight oh so slowly. I guess it's all the running around after his older brother and sister! All went well except for the ear infection and persisting cough (but we have meds to take care of those!)

We just got home from a five day trip to Wilson to spend Thanksgiving with family. It was a great weekend...filled with three Thanksgiving dinners, about 20 hours of shopping, birthday celebrations, and more!

Ornament Tradition

Growing up, my mom always bought Hallmark ornaments. When I got married and started having my own tree to decorate, she gave me a lot of those ornaments. Now, each year I pick out a Hallmark ornament for our family or the kids that represent the past year. We made that trip today and here are this year's ornaments that have now been added to our tree...

Loren (and my) ornament...the older she gets the more I see some of me in her. She is a perfectionist, is very sensitive and can be very emotional! There have been more times than I can count when I see myself in her!

Bradley (who wanted some elf ornament) got a tackle box this year because he discovered his love of fishing. On a trip with Grandpa, he baited his hook, cast it out, caught a fish an reeled it in all by himself! It was love at first catch!

Oh Owen...this ornament describes you so well. Curious George. You are in to everything and a very common phrase around this house is now "monkey see monkey do monkey get in trouble, too!". And for the ball and the book, two of his favorite toys. When Owen saw this ornament in the store display, he called out "ball! ball! ball!" It was perfect for him.

No, I have not forgotten about Thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving and always look forward to going home and spending time with our families, eating lots of great food, and Black Friday shopping! I've just always put up our Christmas decorations before we head out for Thanksgiving. It's the one holiday each year that I really decorate for and I want time to enjoy it all!!!This year, for the first time, we left the good old plastic tree in the storage room and got a real tree! The kids were so excited to pick one out and bring it home and we had fun picking out ornaments and stringing lights (which we haven't done in a while since our tree was prelit!).

It's not that I don't have a hundred things on my to-do list...but I needed a little distraction from it all and found it in a craft project for the boys. For about $4 per shirt, I made these matching shirts for Owen and Bradley. Before long, Bradley will probably start to put up a fight about stuff like this, so I'm going to do it while I can.

18 Months Already???

I about let it slip away...in the hustle and bustle of candy and costumes over the weekend my littlest man turned 18 months old! While he doesn't have his well visit apt until the end of November, we did have to make a trip to the pediatiricain this week due to a nasty repiratory virus. At that appointmnet he weighed 26.2 pounds and was 33 1/2 inches. He gains weight slowly but in moving and grooving in the height department with each visit.

He has changed so much in the past couple of months. He talks and talks and talks. Unlike his brother who was always very quiet and just grunted, Owen has quite a vocabulary and is very good and gettting his message across. Just in the past week or so, he will give Joe and I an occastional "I wuv you" at bedtime after we tell him. Melts my heart. Speaking of bedtime...he's now sleeping in a twin bed. Between him climbing out of his crib and his love of his brother's bed (which was bunkbeds until Owen started climbing and hanging from them) we decided to give it a shot and Owen did wonderful. He thinks he is big stuff climbing in his big boy bed at nap time and bed time.

Owen has also gained a new nickname, monkey, as in "monkey see, monkey do, monkey get in trouble, too!" Owen is Bradley's little shadow and is always right behind him (and Loren once she gets home from school) doing whatever they are doing. I love to hear him call his brother's name, or "Brabby" as it sounds, or call "Sissy" when's he's right on their heels. Both his brother and sister are wonderful with him. While they fight like brothers and sister...we're blessed that they get along so well together and play together.Owen still loves his blanket and this thumb...at some point I know it has to go, but for now it's his comfort. He looks like Linus dragging around his blanket!

Well, Owen, you've been my littlest man for a year and half. I hope I treasure every moment while your this small, because it seems to be going by faster each day. I love you little buddy. Happy 1/2 birthday.

I love living in a small town...where you feel safe letting your kids trick or treat and the people really get into the celebration. We battled the cold and drizzle and did a quick trip around downtown West Jefferson this evening to trick or treat. Here it is...the official Halloween 2011 pictures! I probably worked harder on costumes this year than I have since we had kids. There was a lot of paper mache and duct tape involved (for Bradley's anyway) but the kids were all excited about their costumes so it was so worth it! Even Owen wore his costume the whole night with little fuss...yes, he even wore the hat and the beard. I guess he figured it help keep him warm.We celebrated a day early with a Fall Festival at our church. There was a big trunk or treat, huge blow up slides and a hay ride. We did it all, came away with way too much candy, but had so much fun!

Tonight was the first of many years of elementary fall festivals! We went planning to spend a few minutes and let the kids play a few games, but when it was time to leave Loren started crying that she had not dunked Mrs. Robinson (the principal) yet in the dunk booth. Obviously, Loren had been waiting all day and talked about it endlessly with her teacher. We ended up staying another 40 minutes waiting for Mrs. Robinson's turn in the dunk tank. And guess what...

We made caramel apples and pumpkin rolls this afternoon...two fun fall treats! My mom and I made the pumpkin rolls and all the kids helped with the caramel apples. I'm pretty excited about getting a caramel apple because it was one of the few treats we didn't get at the state fair last week.

State Fair 2011

It's been years since we've made it to the State Fair...but we could not pass it up this year. We left our house at 7am, spent over 10 hours having fun at the fair, then arrived back home at close to midnight, but it was all worth it. The kids were able to ride so many rides and we enjoyed a lot of exhibits. We also enjoyed several fair delicacies...including blooming onions, ice cream cones, huspuppies, bright leaf hot dogs, pickles, cotton candy, and the infamous krispie kreme bacon burger!!! (Yes, we actually ate one!). These few pics can't begin to cover all the fun we had, but here's some of our fair fun!

It's October and that means it's time for Halloween crafts! I found this "design your own monster" iron on kits on clearance a couple of weeks ago, and this afternoon Loren and Bradley made their own shirts. They loved creating and recreating their monsters over and over again before they got it just right. Now they have and extra special shirt to wear this Halloween season!

Moving Up in the World

Look who's moving up in the world. We had to take down the bunk beds because little adventure boy kept climbing to the top bunk and even dangling off the edge. For safety's sake, we will have two twin beds for a while. We decided to just try Owen in the twin bed (with rails) and after only getting out of bed once at nap, he was asleep. Bedtime went the same, and we've now had 2 naps and 2 nights in the twin bed and he's done GREAT! He thinks he big stuff in his big boy bed. For the time being, the crib was just relocated to the extra bedroom...just in case we need it. And, I can't bring myself to take it down quite yet. No crib in the house, that's a sad thought (but that does mean that I'm pregnant or have any intention of getting that way!)

We love Great Wolf Lodge...but that place can be expensive!!! That's why we loved it when we found this great deal. It was a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club and allowed to us buy day passes (unheard of!) to Great Wolf's water park for only $5 per person. We not only enjoyed a great day at Great Wolf, but all of Joe's family was there, too, so we got to spend the day with aunts, uncles, cousins and Nana and Papa! It was a fantastic family day and we can't wait until they run this deal again in the spring!

Loving a DIY Project!

I am starting to really love a DIY project. We found this table and chair set a used furniture store in Wilson. After some haggling, we snagged it for $20 bucks, and with the cost of a coupon cans of spray paint (and some paint we already had at home) we transformed it into an awesome desk for the kids to use in the playroom. The chairs look brand new, but the kids love the chalkboard top. Now I'm on the look out for another project to tackle!

This is our second day of harvesting grapes off of our vine. The first round we made two gallons of grape juice. We have all loved it and I doubt it lasts long before it's all gone! This round of grapes we hope to use to make some home made grape jelly. We have really enjoyed harvesting everything from the garden and the fruit that grows around our yard. But we're not done...we still have the apples to harvest!

Went to meet Joseph at the park for lunch today...and to surprise him with a birthday cake fit perfectly for park rangers at New River! For those of you who may not know, that's a hellbender on the cake. Made of rice krispy treats!!! Joseph's birthday is actually on Monday, but today was his last day at work this week. We're heading home for the holiday weekend, so I wanted him to be able to celebrate with his work family!

Two Weeks into Kindergarten

One of major factors we looked at when moving to Ashe County was the school system. We wanted a place where we felt comfortable sending our kids to public school. The closer it came to sending Loren to school the more hesitations I had (not because of the school system, though). We finally decided to send her to kindergarten and see how it went. Well, we're more than two weeks in now and she LOVES school. To quote her when she got off the bus yesterday "I think I like school more and more everyday".

I must say it's been a learning experience for me! I was in the classroom for seven years before I decided to be a full time mommy, but that didn't prepare me for this. It's so different being the parent in the education equation than the teacher. I've tried not to be the overbearing parent while still making myself available. I've attended PTO meetinsgs, signed up to be on the School Improvement Team, and will be volunteering in the medica center. If my child (and soon children) are going to be at that school, then I will be, too!

It's already been a year of changes...but mostly ones that have stressed mommy and have not affect Loren much at all. First of all it was buses...changing routes a week and half into school. On the day the new routes were to start we still didn't knw what bus Loren would ride or if we were going to let her ride at all. (We will only let her ride if she is on the bus a short period of time). That turned out well. With her new bus route she is the first one off the bus and is home within 5 minutes of school getting out. Then, came the big hurdle. A week into school it was determined that the K class sizes were too large and they added another teacher. This mean a "random' drawing to determine which student from each class would move to the new classroom. While I knew if Loren was selected she would be upset, I also knew she would adjust quickly and still go on to have a wonderful year, I dreaded the idea of it happening. Loren loves her teacher and Joe and I have been pleased with how the year had started, too. It took a week from the time the announcment was made until we go "the call"...but it was the call to tell us she was staying in her current class. I've asked myself, as all parents do I'm sure, "Am I doing the right thing"...but I really feel like this is where Loren needs to be. It's good for her on many levels and I'm looking forward to a favulous rest of the year. I just hope we're done with the big changes for this year!

Fishing on the New River

How could I forget to share these pics? Joe, Papa and Bradley went canoeing down the river and fished along the way. Bradley is becoming quite the little fisherman and loves any chance to get to go. They spent almost 3 hours fishing, and when it was to go Bradley got upset and exclaimed "But I thought we were going to fish!" I guess time flies when your having fun with your daddy and your Papa!

I Heart Yard Sales!!!

I love a good yard sale! Maybe it's the frugalista in me, but there's nothing better than a good deal. And yard sales, there's a lot more than junk out there!!! For example...today Nana and I hit Ashe County early and it didn't take us long to come across some great deals!

Checkout these two dress shirt and sweater combos...$5 for both! Loren's Christmas outfit, $3 and the crocs with Jibitz $1!!! A pair of Sonoma dress shoes for Loren for next summer $2. I also found a much needed item...bed rails. Two brand new, ever used bed rails (for when we move Owen into the bottom bunk bed) both for $5!!! Later in the morning we came across a "I want it all gone" kinda sale where the price was $2 for whatever you could put in large trash bag! I grabbed some great coats for Loren (4 in all), several pairs of athletic pants, corduroys and sweaters for Bradley. Then...my favorite find of the day...a new bed set for our bedroom. I could not believe how perfectly all the colors matched the curtains we had, looked great with our dark furniture, and the blue accents go great with the blue walls in the attached bathroom. Here's the great part...it's a set from JCPenny (order form was still in the box, dated Sept 2010) and the price paid on the receipt from Penny's was $230! I paid $50 for it all. Woohoo!!!

These pics are just some of the great finds we came across today...believe me, you don't want me to post pics of everything! But all together I found probably close to $600 worth of clothes, shoes (and the bedding) all in great condition!!! I just love it.

We really enjoyed our visit with Nana and Papa this week. Loren, Bradley and Owen especially love having so much time to spend with them. Bradley quickly became Papa's buddy and did not want to leave his side all week.

Bradley's First Soccer Game of the Season

Another season as the gold team...I think this makes three or four seasons that we've had the same color shirts. Can't we break out of this gold pattern? But anyway, on to the important stuff!

Bradley is actually playing soccer this go around! We are so proud of him. When he played his first season it typically involved tears and temper tantrums trying to just get him on field. Now he's a little fireball on the field. We're still working on "no hands" and that goes for the ball and other soccer players! He did score a goal in the first game (by using his hands and feet)...but it still counts, right???

Lowes Build and Grow

We love Lowe's Build and Grow program!!! As you can see, we've gone to a few of them ;). They are free and the kids have built so many neat things. It's amazing how much they have improved their following directions and building skills since we've started these, so it's not just fun...they are actually learning, too! Today's project was a school house picture frame. Then, this afternoon I got domestic and sewed the last several patches on their apron. They were so excited to see all the patches of all the project they have done!

Bradley's PreK Year

While Loren is off to school, Bradley is beginning his own academic career. We are working with him at home this year with PreK materials to get him ready for Kindergarten next year. We started with colors today and he can't get enough of his "school work". I'm proud of my little man!

I had to share this photo of Loren getting off the school bus this afternoon. She was just as excited when she came home as she was when she left this morning. That made this momma very happy! She loved her first day in kindergarten and is ready to go back!
Yes, I'm corny, I know...but to celebrate Loren's first day of kindergarten we had a special dessert after supper tonight. It was a "Look Whooo's in Kindergarten" cake. We even sang her a special rendition of "Happy First Day of Kindergarten to You" (sang to the Happy Birthday tune!). We wanted this whole day to be special for her.
If day one is any representation of how this year will go...it's be a great one!

First Day of Kindergarten

Well, today was the day. The day that my first born, my only girl, started kindergarten. She was awake before the sun (6:30am to be exact) and could not wait to get out the door. If she hadn't been this excited about school it would of been so much harder on me, so I'm thankful that she wasn't hesitant. In fact, she didn't even want Joe and I to walk to her classroom this morning...but mommy needed it (and pictures) so we told her that this would be the only time we could do it. I guess tomorrow it's drop her off in the car drop off line and just watch her walk in the school like the big girl she is!
Now, I guess it's time to figure out what being home with two boys is like and wait for 2:52 when the big yellow bus should be here!!

You never know what the day will bring! Today we were invited over to Oakwood Farm to watch their new babydoll sheep get sheered. A year and half of wool growth, gone in minutes. It was really neat to watch and, as always, the kids love being on the farm with all the animals! Thanks Kim, for the invite!!!

On the River

For the past three years, when Jessica and Brandon have vacationed in the mountains they have come up to spend a day with us. This year we planned to go tubing (we got a babysitter, so it was a treat for Joe and I, too). It was a beautiful day...perfect day on the river.

After tubing we indulged in a Bella Buster and enjoyed hanging around the house and catching up.

I hope they have a great rest of the week on their vacation and I look forward to seeing them again soon!!!

Corn Harvest

We harvested 55 ears of corn out of the garden today (and there are many more left out there...but they needed a little more time!). I love that our garden is a family affair. We were all out there picking the corn, and we all enjoy eating it, too!

15 Month Update

Owen turned 15 months old over the weekend and went for his well visit on Tuesday! All went well at the appointment. My favorite part was that Owen demonstrated beautifully his "I will only throw a tantrum if someone is watching" skills. At one point he wanted a toy his sister had, so he assumed his face down position on the floor to cry about it. I told Shelia (our pediatrician) about Owen's skill and she wanted to try it out, so we all got up and walked out of the room and into a room directly across the hall. As soon as we left the room Owen immediately quit crying. He got up and walked to the door of the exam room and as soon as he laid eyes on us resumed his fit. It was pretty funny (or as funny as a temper tantrum can be!).

Here are Owen's 15 month stats (as of August 2)
Height: 33 1/4 inches (95th%tile)
Weight: 23.9 lbs (40th%tile)
Head: 49 1/2cm (95th%tile)

Notice anything funny with his weight??? The boy has hardly gained any weight in 3 months, even though he eats like a horse and despite growing over 2 inches in the same amount of time! Pediatrician said it was probably because his energy has gone to the increase in height and his tremendous increase in mobilization over the past 3 months. Nothing to worry about. We are just used to our chunky monkeys and Owen is a string bean!

Robbins Pool

Well, it's amazing how much we still don't know about this area after living here for 2 years. This week we learned about Robbins Pool in Blowing Rock. I've longed for a place to take the kids swimming in the sun...and around here there are not many options...but we've found somewhere we love. It may be a 45 minute drive, but it's worth it! The kids had a blast today and wore themselves out. (They all got a 45 minute nap on the way home!) I know we will visit the pool again, and hopefully get a season pass next summer!!!

I think Loren did the water slide a hundred times while we were there...she couldn't get enough of it!

Playing Around the House

After baths tonight the kids just played around the house. Loren was especially "motherly" tonight to Bradley and I enjoyed watching them play together. I loved that in this picture, Owen stopped snuggling with his sister to give the camera a cheesy grin!

She said Owen wanted to sit in her lap and draw on the chalk table. (and yes, I know that Bradley is in his underwear...that's his normal. That boy LOVES to just be in his underwear. We just say that all superheros like to walk around in their underwear).

She even wanted to give him his milk before bed. Just sweet!

Bradley's First Soccer Practice

For the first time, Bradley is playing sports this season and his sister is sitting one out! (She's holding out for basketball to start later this fall). This is Bradley's second season playing soccer. His first attempt, last fall, was spent mostly being super shy and refusing to even get on the field. I was concerned that history would repeat itself, but I was very pleased that today her went straight on to the field and participated the entire practice like a champ! In fact, he probably played more soccer in this 40 minute practice than he did all of last fall! This just may be a great season after all. Go Bradley!

School Supplies!

I've bought school supplies for years...as a student and a teacher. But, for the first time I've been given a supply list for my child! It makes me want to laugh, smile, and cry all at the same time. Just over 2 more weeks until Loren starts kindergarten, but at least we're ready as far as supplies go. We'll see that morning if Mommy and Loren are ready for this or not!

Track Trail

We went to New River this week to complete our third track trail (and the kids are so excited to have their Track Trail prizes now!). This one was a spring themed scavenger hunt. Although we did it in the middle of summer, we were still able to find most of the items on the list!

Then we went to the park's last preschool program of the summer. It was about animal tracks, and this on of my favorite pics...of Owen making his own tracks! We have really enjoyed spending time in the park this summer.

There are so many reasons we love living in the mountains...and Elk Shoals is one of them. We love spending an afternoon playing in the river. Loren can do little "tubing" runs (and as you can see in the pics, it's not always a smooth run!). While Stephen, Meriem and the kids were visiting, we enjoyed some time playing in the river. For being mid-July, it was actually kinda cool..but a perfect day to play.

It's Harvest Time

I know all you folks back east have been getting goodies out of your garden for a while now, but up here in the mountains that time is just arriving! Today we got our first pickings out of the garden! Squash, cucumbers, peas and broccoli! Our peppers, corn, tomatoes, melons, and more are doing great out there and should we should begin harvesting that soon.

I see a lot of canning and freezing in our future and I can't wait!!!

Weekend at Kerr Lake

We had a great weekend with my dad at Kerr Lake. My dad loves going to Kerr Lake and fishing for catfish and we had been looking forward to joining him for a few days. Bradley, especially, could not wait to go fishing with Grandpa. There was no disappointment with the fishing...by the time we left Sunday afternoon there were around 60lbs of fillets in the cooler! Bradley and Loren also did good on their own...both mastering their fishing skills and they caught a couple fish. Bradley was on a role for a little while...snagging two catfish (2-3 lbs) but both broke his line before he could get it reeled in!!!

Track Trail Program

Today was an oddity...Loren and Bradley were the only kids at New River's preschool program. (in past weeks there have been upwards of 20 kids!). What a great experience for them, especially since today's program was about the park's new Track Trail. Loren and Bradley got to go one on one with Ranger Jeff and so a scavenger hunt through the trail. They really enjoyed the program!

Owen's First Haircut

It's been past time for Owen to get his first haircut, but I loved those little curls so much! But, he's a little boy and it was time for him to look like one again. Who else would we have do the honors but Christina??? And you should be happy to know that I did not even shed a tear. I did mist up a little bit at one point, but gained my composure quickly! And now, just look...he looks so much older!!! Like such a little boy!!!

Fireworks at Ashe Park

We decided to brave the crowd to take the kids to see the fireworks up close and personal this year at Ashe Park. We arrived about 7pm and there was already a HUGE crowd there, despite the we weather all afternoon. We ended up parking right outside the park and walked in for the kids to play on the jump houses and listen to the music for a little while. Then we headed back to the truck to relax and wait for the "boom-bas". We were unsure how Owen would react...he's never really been close to any fireworks, but he LOVED them. He literaly "oohed" and "aahed" with each one. At one point they got him tickled and he laughed harder and harder with each firework. It was too cute.

4th of July Feast

The rain may have dampered our hopes of sitting on the patio enjoying a 4th of July meal outside...but it was all just as good in the dining room. Joe grilled some kabobs and we enjoyed fresh corn on the cob, pasta salad, baked beans and 4th of July strawberries. And don't forget about the red white and blue cake! We enjoyed the afternoon together as a family and still hoping that the weather will clear out so we can enjoy some Ashe County fireworks tonight!

Meet Eleanor!

It's been a sad week at our house with the loss of Roxy. Loren and Bradley truly loved that dog and loved playing with her. We knew that we would have to look for a new puppy, and today we found Eleanor! She is an 8 week old beagle and is too cute for words! Here's hoping that we'll have a long long long time to love Eleanor!

Getting Organized

I think every woman, whether you work full time, stay at home, have a house full of kids or none desires be organized and feel like they have their life in order. As a stay at home mom of 3 kids, and with one starting school soon (so I know that will add a lot to our plates) I struggle with this all the time. I want my house to be clean (not perfect, but presentable at least) and have a handle of everything from sports schedules, to dinner and commitments to more.

Well, I had the opportunity recently to read "How to get Organized in 20 Days". After reading through the book I am encouraged about the changes I can make in our household to make things run smoothly and be more organized. I am hopeful that in less than a month I can look back and know that 20 days of hard work were worth it and I can reap the benefits of a household that flows more easily. This book was obviously written by a woman who is living the life...not sitting behind a desk. She understands the struggles and trials that a woman faces when trying get her life and her kids life in a better working order!

How to Get Organized in 20 Days!

Some parts of this book I really liked include:

It encourages the Dave Ramsey method of debt resolution.
Uses easy to follow lists and daily and ongoing tasks. I'm a type A personality and I like my "to do" lists.
Covers a variety of areas of life...not just cleaning and cooking! I'm looking forward to tackling each room of my house and many areas of organization.
Worksheets and forms are provided int eh book to help with organizing.
The downloadable worksheets, cleaning games, forms, and other tools on her website are great!
The author blogs on the topic...so subscribe to her blog and keep the organizing going.

Some things I that may not work for us:

This book encourages on line calendars and databases...I like the good old paper calendars and contact books. I don't have access to the internet at all times, but I can carry my calendar with me.
Some "daily" tasks would be difficult to accomplish in one day, but with that being said, every task is a worthwhile to accomplish.
Our family schedule can't be duplicated day to day or week to week. With different work schedules, kids programs and activities, it's never the same. So not every idea or suggestion will work for everyone.

Happy "And Uvshre"

For those of you that can't read "5 year old" writing...that's Happy Anniversary! And what a day it was!!!

I woke up this morning to flowers, a card and a pink New River hat (I had really been wanting that hat...so I was pretty excited). For the first few moments of the day it was looking like it would be a wonderful day.

Then, I got the news from my mom that every daughter dreads...possible cancer. I know it's hard on her and I can't imagine what is going through her mind. And I hate being so far away at a time like this, but I hope she knows that she is in our prayers and I'm asking all of our friends to keep her in your prayers, too.

Then, our dog, Roxy (yes, the one we just got less than 2 months ago) was hit and killed by a car. Loren and Bradley are heartbroken. Roxy was the perfect dog for them. They played together everyday and loved every minute of it. Roxy loved the kids as much as they loved her. It will be an adjustment around here getting used to life without that little ball of energy.

At least the night ended on a good note. The end of the week program at VBS complete with some yummy homemade ice cream! Loren and Bradley both sang with their classes (I'll try to upload some pics and videos on another post).

And lastly, Joe and I came home and spent a couple of hours cooking and canning some homemade blueberry jam. It was our first "canning" of the year and I can not wait to enjoy some with warm biscuits in the morning. At least it was a SWEET ending to the day.

With everything good and bad that happened today, I am truly grateful that today was a day to look back to our wedding (11 years ago) and just remember how lucky and beyond blessed we are to have the marriage we do.

Happy Anniversary, Joseph. I love you...you are a wonderful husband and devoted father and a upstanding man!

Ashe County Pickers

Pickers of blueberries that is! I was determined this year not to miss the blueberry crop...and we made it there this morning and came home with about 4 gallons of blueberries. Oh the good eats that are in our future...blueberry pancakes and waffles, blueberry crisp, blueberry ice cream, and hopefully some blueberry preserves!!! After picking for over an hour the boys were ready to quit but Loren and I were going strong. I finally had to give in and get the boys out of the heat and promised Loren we would go back and pick some more before the season ends.

The Big Apple Adventure Begins

Just wanted to share our first VBS photos of this year. The first night was great! Loren is in love with her "big kid" class (she's in the 5/K class, so she feels like she's moved up in the world!!!). Joe and I are back at home in the 3 year olds and have a great group of them...no clingers or cryers on night 1, I think that might be a record!!!

Busy Busy Busy Saturday

We always like to see how much fun we can cram into one day! Today started off with the "end of VBS" program at Midway Baptist. Loren and Bradley went all went to their Hometown Bethlehem VBS and really enjoyed it.

At lunch, Loren and I left to head to Barter Theater in Virginia. I had planned for weeks for us to go see the play Beauty and the Beast. It was a great for just Loren and I to spend some time together. The play was AWESOME! I really enjoyed it and so did Loren.

While the girls were gone, Joe and the boys went our church's VBS kickoff. There was lots of fun things for the kids to do and a burger and hot dog supper. Our VBS starts tomorrow night (Joe and I are once again teaching the 3 year olds...but looking forward to it!!! We've got some great friends helping us out, so it will be fun!) I'm sure we'll have more VBS photos throughout the week.

New River Preschool Program Week 2

I just have to start by saying that I think the Ranger that did today's program was down right handsome...and whoever was lucky enough to snag that man for her husband is one lucky gal!!!

OK...onto the real post...today's program was great. The kids learned more about turtles and the difference between land turtles and water turtles. There were books, songs, costumes, crafts, snacks and a live turtle!!! Another great program at New River State Park!!!

Today we visited the Lazy 5 Ranch with a group from our church. Although it was hot and the animals were a little more lethargic that when we've been in the past, it was still a great trip. We always love seeing all the animals and going on the wagon ride.
